A work opens only for reading, or doesn't open
Why a work opens in reading mode or doesn't open on this computer, and what to do in each case. · 2 min read
With your computer activated, every work you save carries your author signature. That's how Exaratio knows whose it is and decides how it opens: for writing, if it's yours and your license is active on this computer; for reading, in any other case (Who can edit and export a work).
If it opens only for reading
A work you can't edit opens in the Reader, with the Read only badge at the top. Click it: Exaratio tells you why and, if there's something you can do, gives you the button to do it.
- Your license isn't active on this computer. This happens on a new computer, if you were offline for more than 30 days or if your license expired. Click My license, or choose Help → Your license, and then Activate on this computer or Validate now (Your licenses and your computers). In the meantime, your work can always be exported with Export.
- The work isn't signed. This happens with works you wrote before activating Exaratio on this computer. If it's yours, click Make this work mine: Exaratio saves a copy signed with your account next to the file and opens it so you can write in it. The original doesn't change.
- The work belongs to someone else. You can read it, but only its author can edit it.
- The file was changed outside Exaratio. The signature no longer matches the content. Go back to a copy you saved with Exaratio.
To see whose work it is and whether its signature matches, look at its presentation in the Reader (The work's presentation and its book).
If it doesn't open
Exaratio tells you why, with one of these messages:
- "This work is already open in another Exaratio window…": look for the window that has it; Exaratio brings it to the front.
- "…this computer lets another program peer into Exaratio's windows": a Windows setting lets another program see what Exaratio displays. To protect other people's works, they don't open while it's on; yours do. Ask your company's IT support to remove it.
