What you can make

What you’re making offers Paper (the one that appears when you open), Themes, Key sounds, Ambience, Entrance, Typeface and A genre (several things at once). When you change the type, you start from scratch.

All of them carry a Name and a Description, and at the end Preview (optional), the License you share it under and the Credits.

You see it as you make it

The dialog stays to one side, without covering the page. A theme or a paper is applied as a trial in the window while you choose the colors, so you can see how they look. When you close the workshop, whatever you had in place comes back.

A paper
  • The color of the Paper and of the Ink.
  • Edges: Smooth, Torn, Deckled or Burnt.
  • Finish: Plain, Ruled lines, Grid, Dots, Continuous form paper or Phosphor screen.
  • What happened to it: checkboxes such as A cup ring, Folds, Foxing spots, Toasted edges or Lamplight.
  • Tear it another way changes where the edge tears and where the stains fall.
  • Page texture (optional): an image that repeats under the page.
A theme
  • Starting style: one of the twelve styles. Whatever your theme doesn't change comes from that style.
  • A color for each thing, grouped: The window, The page, The accent, The ribbon, The manuscript, The panel and The dates.
  • If two colors that sit one over the other have too little contrast to read, the workshop warns you below.
  • Page texture (optional), as in the paper.
Key sounds
  • Keystrokes: several sound files, which alternate as you type. Each one, at most one second long.
  • Separate, optional sounds for the space bar, Enter and delete.
  • Pitch variation and Force variation, so it doesn't always sound the same. It sounds better with little pitch variation.
Ambience
  • The loop: a sound that repeats without a pause. Let it end where it begins. Exaratio stores it in mono and at most two minutes long.
  • Goes quiet after this many minutes without typing: from 1 to 120.
Entrance
  • Animation: The typewriter platen, A book’s cover, A terminal booting up or The title dissolving.
  • Duration (milliseconds): from 600 to 4000.
  • Sound (optional).
  • Watch shows it.
A font
  • The typeface files: Regular, and if you have them, italic, bold and bold italic.
  • Its license: required, the text of the typeface's license (usually OFL.txt). It travels with the font.
  • If a character is missing: the family used for the characters the font doesn't include.
A genre

Check the parts it includes (theme, paper, keys, ambience, entrance, font) and make each one as if it were on its own. They all travel together in a single signed module. At least one is required.

The license you distribute it under

License you share it under: CC0 1.0 (public domain), CC BY 4.0 (crediting the author), CC BY-SA 4.0 (crediting and sharing alike), SIL Open Font License 1.1 (fonts) or All rights reserved. In Credits, say where each thing comes from: who recorded a sound, where an image comes from, under what license.

The license also decides whether a paper can travel inside a work: if its license doesn't allow redistributing it, it can't be set as the work's paper (Installed themes and papers).

Sign and save
  • What you make is signed by your account: it is yours, and you answer for it.
  • To save it you need Exaratio activated with your account (Activate your license). Without that you can try it out, but Sign and save can't be pressed.
  • Exaratio rebuilds each file you chose before putting it in the module: sounds, images and fonts don't go in as they are.
  • When it finishes, it tells you where it ended up and offers Install it on this computer as well.

You can distribute that .xrtm: whoever installs it will see that you signed it (Modules: sounds, themes, papers and more).
