Where everyone appears: mentions and occurrences

Exaratio recognizes your characters in the text; you can associate a “he” or a nickname by hand and jump from one occurrence to the next. · 2 min read

Exaratio finds your characters in the text by their name and their aliases: these are occurrences. When the text calls them something else, like “the girl”, you can associate it by hand: that's a mention.

The underlines

  • Dots: a name that Exaratio recognized.
  • Wavy line: a name shared by two entities (Aliases: one character, many names).
  • Solid line: a mention you associated yourself. Hover over it to see who it belongs to.

The underlines are just for you: they don't appear in the book or when you read the work (F5F5).

Associate a piece of text

  1. Select the words, for example “the girl”.
  2. Choose Review → Associate selection, or right-click → Associate with an existing entity.
  3. Choose the entity and click OK.

On a name Exaratio already recognizes, there's no need to select anything: just right-click it.

To correct it, put the cursor on it, right-click and choose Change the associated entity or Remove the association. Mentions are saved with the chapter.

When a name is nobody

If a word is recognized as a character without being one, like “a rose” when your character is called Rose, right-click it and choose Here “rose” is not an entity. In that spot it stops counting as an occurrence, and stays as ordinary text.

If you made a mistake, press Ctrl+Z⌘Z, or right-click the same word and choose Recognize “rose” as an entity again.

Jump from one occurrence to another

On the entity's sheet, click Find next occurrence in the text (the magnifying glass). Each time, it takes you to the next one, in the order of the book: if the next one is in another chapter, it opens it. It counts both occurrences and mentions.

Who's in the scene

At the top of the panel, In the scene brings together everyone who appears in the passage you're writing, with how many times each one is named (The context panel while you write).
