Read a work with Exaratio

Exaratio reads works for free, without a license. How to open the one you received and what you can do with it. · 2 min read

To read an Exaratio work you don't need a license: install Exaratio (Install Exaratio and activate your license) and open it. Without a license, Exaratio is a reader.

Open the work

Double-click the file you received —an .xrtb edition (The edition, the book you share) or an .exar work—, or choose File → Open (Ctrl+O⌘O). The work opens straight away for reading: first you'll see its presentation (The work's presentation and its book) and, whenever you like, the reading begins.

The first time you open Exaratio without a license, Thank you for using Exaratio greets you. If you're only going to read, click Not now.

What you can do

Everything that makes reading enjoyable: set up the page the way you like it (Set up the page the way you like it), know who is in each scene without anything being spoiled (Who is here, without spoilers), look up what a word means, leave your notes and what you felt (Take notes, mark, underline and ask), see the numbers of your reading and, if its author wanted it, rate the work when you finish it (Rate a work, anonymously).

Exaratio remembers where you were: the next time you open the work, your reading is still there.

What you can't do

A work belongs to its author: you read it, but you don't change it or take it out of Exaratio in another format. That's why it always opens for reading, even if you have an Exaratio license. If you want to know why a particular work opens this way, click the Read only badge (A work opens only for reading, or doesn't open).

Close the work

Press Esc: the work closes and Exaratio is ready to open another. If something is open on top of the text, such as a sheet or your settings, the first Esc closes that.
