Tidy a chapter in one go

Make a pasted or hastily written chapter look like a book, without changing a single word.

  1. Open the chapter.
  2. Click Auto-format, next to the styles.

When it's done, a notice sums up what it did and offers Undo.

What it does
  • Puts the chapter title at the top if it wasn't there, and gives lines that are headings ("Chapter 3", "Epilogue"…) their style, as your palette says (Paragraph styles and your palette).
  • Turns lines with * * * and runs of blank lines into scene breaks.
  • Joins lines that were broken mid-sentence.
  • Fixes typography for the work's language: extra spaces, dialogue dashes, quotes and ellipses.
  • Justifies the prose with indents, except the first paragraph after a heading or a break.

Anything you centered or right-aligned on purpose is left alone.

Undo it

With Undo in the notice, or with Ctrl+Z⌘Z.
