A book with choices

An interactive book: at the end of a fragment, the reader chooses where it goes next.

  1. File → Work properties, Book type tab: under Book type, choose Interactive.
  2. At the foot of each fragment, under When this fragment ends, choose how it ends: The reader decides, Continues in, The next in the book or Ending.

Changing the type deletes nothing.

The choice

With The reader decides, click Edit the decision: type The question (optional) and each option, with What the button says and where it leads. An option can burn: once chosen, it isn't offered again. Whatever the reader chooses is burned.

The book's graph

In an interactive book, the montage button on the rail opens Book graph: each fragment is a box, and the book is put together by connecting them. Drag a fragment's port to another so it continues there, or to empty space to create a new one. Double-click opens a fragment.

The choice's stage

Stage, on the ribbon, designs the page that comes up when the reader reaches the end of the fragment; on paper it's a separate sheet.

Printing it

On the same tab you choose When printed, the sections are and the Continuity mark, which helps readers find where to continue in the PDF and in Word.

Each path's time

Each option opens a branch of time: what happens behind one option doesn't exist in the others (Time in a book with choices).
